Why all the fluid during labor?

This question has come up on some other BB's I use, so I thought I'd pose it here.

It seems that almost everyone got multiple bags of IV solution during their labor and delivery, even if they were not dehydrated. I was definitely not dehydrated and swollen like a blimp, but I got 3L of IV fluid during the 4 hours I was in L&D at the hospital. They drained 1800cc from my bladder the next morning!! I was swollen for days.

What's the benefit of this fluid overload?

Thanks,

Andrea
