Re: fifth disease at 7 weeksFrom: Alisa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 25 Feb 2000 11:24:20 -0600 (CST)
I am now 35w3d pregnant with my first, I am 23 yrs old. I was exposed to 5th disease during my 1st trimester. I went to the dr and they did a blood test to test me for the virus and the antibodies. I had neither. Basically, I was exposed to 5th disease, but didn't catch it - which is a good thing because I have never been exposed to it before. If I am exposed to it again, I could catch it. Very, very lucky. There are some statistics that show that even if you are exposed, the chances that it will get transmitted to your baby are really slim, and even if it is transmitted - the chances that it will have any affect on him/her are slim. Don't worry. If the neighbor girl was home sick with 5th disease, she was no longer contagious. She would be contagious for the week before the spots showed up. So be on the look-out in about a week to see if you notice any red spots on your face or arms, legs, chest. You may get infected, but show no visible signs also. But the blood test at the dr will show. The dr's are able to tell via u/s whether the baby has been infected - he/she will look kinda puffy because he/she will be retaining fluid. There are things that they can do if the baby by some odd chance does get infected. It will require more care, but you and the baby will be fine. Don't worry or stress, that won't help anything out. I hope that this has beena little helpful. I went through the stress of worrying if me and my baby were fine - and all turned out ok. Smile! ~Alisa
