This is one of those troublesome times in gynecology. You are correct in thinking that an ovarian cyst is normal in early pregnancy, but when you can't see a definite fetus, the question of an ectopic has to be entertained. The biggest problem for the patient is that there is little that can be done except to wait, under close supervision, for a while and rescan. Serial quantitative HCGs can also help. If the pregancy is less than 6 weeks or so, there is not going to be a fetal heart beat yet, and before 5 weeks or so, there is not even a fetal pole. You are in a tough spot, wanting answers that are just not available yet, but hang in there, it sounds as though your doctor is doing all the right things.
