The effect of marijuana smoking on pregnancy and the fetus is unclear. We know that its use is associated with problems, but since marijuana use is very frequently associated with use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs that may confuse the issue. It is almost certain that marijuana smoking, like tobacco smoking, can cause growth retardation, and may possibly make the fetus more likely to develop a certain type of leukemia as a child. Long term effects are not understood. The take home message is that you should stop using right now. Don't put anything into your body that you would not want a 2 year old to consume.
