hi jennifer,

yes many people advocate perineal massage. i certainly do. use either pure olive oil or vitamin e oil. i believe bradley's book on 'husband coached childbirth' has directions on perineal massage in it. it also helps to support the perineum through the birth itself. in my area this is not practice by ob's much at all -- they simply cut you rather than bother with support -- but, i am in the middle of the country where 'progress' seems slow.

as for being scared of labor, READ READ READ. read everything you can get your hands on about childbirth. the more you know the less fear you will have. bradley's book as mentioned above is good. anything by ina mae gaskin or penny simkin would be great also.

i dont know why other women think it is so helpful to tell a first time pregnant woman all their horror stories, but they seem to do just that. try to find someone who has a positive birth experience to talk to. there are lots of birth stories on the web. and believe it or not i consider my long labor ending in c-sec positive. at least I have positive feelings about it.

good luck! vicki At Sun, 20 Feb 2000, Jennifer wrote: >
