31wk5d with twins, possible IUGR?From: Jody (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 18 Feb 2000 23:23:23 -0600 (CST)
I had an ultrasound today at 31wk5d and my twins were estimated to weigh 3 lbs. 5 oz. and 3 lbs. 14 oz. At my last u/s, on 1/27, they weighed in at 2 lbs. 8 oz. and 2 lbs. 13 oz. My doctor mentioned that both babies are smaller than they should be and wrote IUGR on my chart. He spoke briefly with me in the hall, but I wasn't able to get a clear idea of what the prognosis is at this point or even what I can do to aid these babies. I lost 28 lbs. in my first trimester due to being placed on thyroid medication and extreme morning sickness and have only gained 16 lbs back. I have difficulty eating now and am curious as to whether pumping up my own caloric intake can help these babies. From what I have read, 3500 calories per day is what I should be aiming for. I bought a package of Carnation instant breakfasts and plan to drink 3 per day. Is this of any use at this point? I should mention that I suffered a minor abruption of one placenta (the smaller baby's) and I suffer from PIH, which is being controlled by bedrest. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
