MISOPROSTOL? For labor induction?From: Marshella (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 13 Feb 2000 20:36:15 -0600 (CST)
Hello, I am looking for more information on the use of "Misoprostol" as a suppository for provoking dilation of the cervix. I hope I have the name of the drug correct, not sure of spelling! Anyway, what I've read thus far in one book at a bookstore was that it was experimental for this purpose but looked promising. Is it still experimental? How effective is it? Online, I've found that this is a drug used to prevent ulcers from occuring in people taking anti-inflmmatory drugs such as aspirin for long periods of time and decreases the amount of stomach acid. I also found that it shouldn't be taken in pregnancy because it can cause miscarriage (though I'm sure this is if taken orally and early in pregnancy), uterine contractions and bleeding. But no info have I found on its use in inducing labor. And I may have the name wrong. Can anyone help with further information? Thank you. My dr's want to induce me with this drug at 6 Pm tomorrow then start with pitocin (if needed) the next morning.
