BC pill clarification needed pleaseFrom: Jane (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 12 Feb 2000 11:41:02 -0600 (CST)
I am concerned about something I heard recently and really need clarification. I will be delivering my baby soon and discussed birth control options, with my doctor, which would allow me to nurse safely. I specifically chose NOT to go the IUD route as for me it is not an option because as I understand it, it does not stop conception from occurring, but rather prevents a pregnancy from implanting in the uterus. I therefore planned to go on the progesterone only pill once my baby was born. Now I hear that this pill works the same way as an IUD, preventing implantation rather than conception. Is this true? If it is true, this situation raises a serious issue for me as I feel the doctor should have explained how this pill works. Many women may not make the same destinction as I, in regard to when "life" begins and I respect that as their business, but what about the many women who DO believe that life beings at conception??? In fairness to my doctor I did not explain why I chose not to use the IUD so he was not aware that this type of contractetive was not something I was interest in. I honestly thought this pill worked the same way other pills work and had never considered to think it prevented a pregnancy from implanting. I would have been greatly disturbed to think I may have conceived and prevented a pregnancy from going to term because of a misunderstanding on my part. It seems better communication needs to occur. Is there a physicians' association that I could write to, to suggest that medical and family planning practitioners consider clarifying the differences in various birth control choices as far as whether they prevent conception or implantation of an already conceived pregnancy? Thank you so much for your help.
