AMNIOCENTHESIS

My wife and I have been wondering about amniocenthesis, after we realized we are expecting a new child. Is this a procedure indicated only when you have good medical reasons to suspect your baby may have congenital defects, basically for taking abortion-related decisions? or is it nowadays safe enough to be requested as a "normal" procedure for knowing what the probabilities may be for the baby to harbor any genetically-detectable disease?

On the other hand, we will like to know what are the illnesses which can be already detected through this medical procedure?

We want to thank you in advance for your help.
