Adverse Impact of UltrasoundFrom: John (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 13 Jan 2000 14:23:47 -0600 (CST)
Is anyone aware of studies indicating long-term adverse effects on the ova of female fetuses subjected to ultrasound during the first trimester? I'm curious to know if there are findings of chromosome breaks, infertility, etc. Searches I've conducted offer no confirmed evidence of problems, but they offer no confirmed proof of complete safety either. Everything has its risks. This may be a concern along the lines of "heating damage," but the question is spurred by the differing stances I find on the subject. Some individuals are dead set against ultrasound or any procedure invading the uterus. Also, many obstetrics offices now post signs saying that routine ultrasounds are no longer scheduled or recommended. Perhaps the issue is one of economics: there's no significant benefit so why spend the money? Help and comments appreciated, John
