Re: Spironolactone and PregnancyFrom: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 26 Sep 2003 10:23:34 -0500 (CDT)
Please, please, go find another endo. Spironolactone is expressly forbidden when you are pregnant, primarily in the first few months of conception when sexual organs are being developed. In boys it results in obscured sexual organs. In girls spiro can result in polycystic kidneys, as well as deformed genitalia. This occurs very early into a pregnancy, often before a woman even realizes that she is pregnant. Most doctors will not even prescibe spiro unless you are on BCPs, have had a tubal ligation or some other permanent reason to be unable to have children. Not being a doctor, maybe there is something that I unaware of reguarding your specific treatment, but you deffinately need a second opinion on this. This is not a normal route to take. Just like in every profession, not all doctors know what they are doing. I usually recommend endocrinologists over Obgyn because they specialize in treating hormonal imbalances, which is what PCOS is. Frankly, this guy scares me. You didnt mention if this endo tested you for insulin resistance. Often, that is what causes the elevated tesetosterone and if treated can help reduce it. If you werent planning for children right now, I would highly recommend spironolactone. It has done wonders for me. But I would never recommend somebody go this route if they were trying to become pregnant.
