Chromium Picolinate may not be as safe as you think. Studies done in
rats showed that it may in fact be carcinogenic(cause cancer)in high
doses. I have read the study that showed that chromium given at
500-1000mcg(which is considered a high dose)might help insulin levels,
etc. but it is only one study. We already know that chromium in other
forms causes cancer especially if inhaled in the chromium(IV)form. You
should always use caution when it comes to alternative medicines like
chromium picolinate(and you should be careful about what you read on the
internet). On a personal note, I took chromium picolinate for years at
doses around400-600mcg without any effect on my PCOS or hypoglycemia. It
did nothing. After8weeks on Metformin I am really starting to see an
improvement in my hypoglycemia.
I would also like to point out that chromium picolinate comes in
micrograms(mcg)not milligrams(mg). You cannot take 1000mg of
chromium but rather 1000mcg.

I stand corrected, mcg not mg, a typo, sorry, I'm a neuroscientist, I do
research&Rx consulting....I'm not talking about alternative medicine, I
cite studies done at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Duke, USDA, NIH.....Most
forms of chromium are not safe or absorbed, GTF form is problematic,
picolinate and 1 other form seem safe, many of the conditions treated
have higher risks of cancer etc. Often we have deficiencies due to the
lack of trace minerals in out diet or they cannot be absorbed, other
essential mineral include zinc, magnesium.....I stated to work with your
doctor, 400-600mcg may not have been an appropriate dose for you, that's
why the range is set between 500-1000mcg, they know that lower doses may
not work or you may need something more, also many people have severe
problems(liver or anemia)after prolonged Metformin
My post was for information and offered a choice,BTW ask you doctor what
they take, you will be surprised!Marie

Hi, I happened by here for another reason and discovered much discussion
regarding Rx:Metformin/Glucophage, and had recently posted information
regarding a supplement, Chromimum Picolinate that has been used
successfully for conditions like PCOS. Here are the links to the
articles so you can have access to this information. Interesting that
we spend hundreds of dollars/pounds/etc buying brand name Rx, when it
turns out there is something that can be had for less than$20 p/month
and is safer and turning out to be quite versitile, something to
consider.
A supplement:Chromium Picolinate(other forms of chromium not absorbed
well)has been found to safely treat PCOS etc. it works by a different
route and lowers lipids, stabilizes blood sugar/insulin
levels/resistance so works for both hypo/hyper in doses of 500-1000mg
per day(divided doses w/meals)this may be another option to consider
with your doctor. Here are several links
where this is discussed and links and references to studys, one from a
recent conference:
