Just started Metformin, injections to soon...

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. At my first meeting with my RE, he started me on Met (500mg first week, 1000mg this week, 1500mg next week), and mentioned that soon, he would put me on oral contraceptives to "quiet" my ovaries before starting me on hormone injections several weeks after that.

In reading through some of these posts, I've found that many people conceive with just Met and clomid but are usually on it for a few months to a year. (I have had 5 months of clomid treatment without success prior to my RE visit and diagnosis).

Is there any reason why my doctor is accelerating my treatment? I am currently 34 years old so time could be a factor, but I would much prefer a less invasive procedure to start. Also, what exactly is the purpose of taking the pill when i want to get pregnant?

thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.. p
