Hi Melissa, SLow and stedy is the usual way of starting of metformin. Most of us start at 500mg and work our way up. Some of us can not even tolerate 500mg and cut the pills in half to 250mg for a few weeks. Not everyone had side effects from metformin, but if you start yourself at 1000mg and get sick, it will be pretty easy to point the finger at the cause.

Dont get too worried about never eating anything "fun" again. I often post here about what you should and shouldnt eat while on met. Those first few months your stomach may thank you for keeping those carbs down. However, this is a lifestyle change and not a diet. If you drink a 2L bottle of Mt Dew a day to wash down you hershey bars, things are gonna have to change for you. I "try" to aim for healthy choices for my carb intake. I try not to loose sleep if I am at a birthday party and I have been good all week and want a small piece of cake. You will not make it if you are too hard on yourself. As for wine after dinner, alchohol and insulin sensitizers are not too good of a combo, but a glass of wine occationally after dinner most likely wouldnt hurt you. I am assuming that given the fact your doctor started you out at 1000mg of met, this isnt a endocrinologist. If you do not or can not see an endo, give one an office call and talk to the nurses. They should have a more precise answer to your question than the "most likely wont hurt you" that I gave you.
