Re: Any Tips for Nausea and Diarehea from the MetforminFrom: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 10 Sep 2003 18:22:24 -0500 (CDT)
So sorry to hear that you are feeling so bad on metformin It takes on average 4-8 weeks for the side effects to subside if you do experience them. My side effects werent as bad as yours(at least stomach-wise). I did have my "visits to the bathroom but I could time them to 20 mins after I ate. I was far more irritated by the tiredness that lasted 6 weeks. On the plus side now that I am past the "initiation" things are so much better. Did you start right out at 1000mg or at 500mg??? It is important to start slow and work your way up. My endocrinologist started me on 500 then waited a month before raising it. I would like to think that a doctor prescribing metformin (or any drug for that matter) would know information like how much to start with and how to raise the dosages. Alot of us start at 500mg, find it difficult and cut the pills in half for a few weeks. I have little doubt if you started out on 1000mg this is probably where the problem lies. A second possibility is what you are eating is making you sick. Did your doctor talk to you at all about diet?? What you eat can really effect how your stomach feels. Proccessed carbs like sugar, white flour in bread and pasta, and juices, can upset your stomach on metformin. Some of us low carb, I just try to stay away from the "bad carbs" and steer toward the "good" ones" such as whole grains like whole wheat breads and pasta, beans, and fruit instead of juices. The first few weeks I was on metformin I did try to limit even the good carbs. I made a huge improvement in my stomach. You do have to eat some carbohydrates when you are on metformin. Going to low carb can make you as sick as too many. If you try some of the above suggestions and still see no improvement of how you feel at 8 weeks, you need to talk to the doctor and try another insulin sensitizer. Some of us do better on the name brand glucophase, some on the time released glucXR. I have heard good things about avandia(actos). For some women it is easier to take than glucophase.
