Re: New to forum. Questions about Metformin. From: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 30 Aug 2003 03:13:23 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Celeste, Slow and eeas is the best way to up your metformin. I was at 500mg for a month before I went up to 1000. I am assuming that you are taking one at breakfast and one at dinner. Cut the dinner one in half and see if that helps. If it doesnt, go back to 500 for another week or two. Also, did your doctor mention anything about diet to you?? Sugar and refined carbohydrates like white bread on juices can exasterbate the "met moments" that you are experiencing. SOme of us low carb, I dont, but rather I have lowered my carbs and more importantly when I do eat carbs, I aim for whole grains such as whole wheat breads and pasta or brown rice. I dont drink juice, but I do eat fruit sparingly. You asked about when you will ovulate. It can take up to 12- 18 months for metformin to regulate your insulin long enough to bring on ovulation though that doesnt mean that it will take that long for you. Metformin itself doesnt directly bring on ovulation. What it does make the insulin that you already produce work better. Your improved insulin levels bring down, or up hormone levels that are effected by this. You have been "broken" for a long time, give your bady a chance to get healed and hopefully things will turn out fine. On the bright side most of the side effects ease up in about 4-8 weeks so hang in there. The benifits to your health reguardless of wether you decide to become pregnant are well worth it.
