Re: Gastric Bypass SurgeryFrom: Melissa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 28 Aug 2003 12:50:41 -0500 (CDT)
Hey Rebecca, I saw your post for Gastric Bypass and thought I would give you some information. Ok, I will try and tell you a small story about myself to help you better understand my situation. I am 28, 5’9, 310 lbs. I have always wanted children ALWAYS. I have basically been trying for years. But I never got pregnant, and I knew I was healthy, didn’t drink, didn’t smoke, didn’t do drugs, took vitamins. I just thought I took care of myself. So I didn’t know what was wrong. I also had normal periods, never been odd, always on time. So I thought it was the man. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 3 years ago. So he put me on Metformin. He said it would help me also lose weight. So far it has not, even to this day. So when I heard about Gastric Bypass, I thought GREAT, I can lose weight and then when I am down to my size I need to be, I can get pregnant. It will help me. I did my research. I spoke to other men/women that had it done. I would say percentage wise, 85% would not have had it done and wish they could take it back. For many different reasons. Now I also looking into LapBand Surgery, now that sounded better. I put the pros in cons in place for both procedures and I WANTED Lapband. But stupid thing is my insurance does not cover lap band, even though its safer, less painful, less evasive, less time out of work, less expensive, reversible if complications arise, you still can eat normal foods, just not as fatty, duh!!!. Gastric Bypass-They cut your stomach into the size of a walnut, picture eating out with family and only being able to eat one spoonful for each dinner. Plus you can never have sweets, even for bday cake, not one slice, EVER. You will have what they call the dumping effect. Makes you extremely nauseated. You can’t give someone a toast of champagne or sparkling cider for that matter. (You can give them a toast, but you can’t drink it) You can’t have carbonated beverages. With GB (Gastric Bypass), you will be out of work for at least 2-4 weeks, in lots of pain. It is not reversible. You will need to stay in the hospital for a few days just in case complications. $18k-$20K LabBand-You can eat sweets, IN moderation. It just restricts your food intake so you don’t eat as much. No cutting of your stomach. It is adjustable if needed. You can drink carbonated sodas. You will be in less pain from surgery, you can even have same day surgery. Just ask your Dr about it and see if its covered with your insurance. Why mine was not covered is a mystery to me. I showed them pros, cons with doing both for me and me staying fat and having more obese problems than this. But I have learned to deal. I eat better and I work out at the gym. http://www.curvesinternational.com/ It’s a great gym, just for women and there are women all ages, shapes and sizes. I mean there are women in their 70s and women that are 400lbs. They will work with you, encourage you and empower you. See if one is near you. Just do your research and check into which is best for you. http://www.surgicalteam.com/obesity/index.htm Good Luck and take CARE!!!!! Melissa
