Re: I need to help please.From: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 27 Aug 2003 15:01:18 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Brandy, Yes there is a difference betweem polycystic ovaries(PCO) and polycystic ovarian sydrome(PCOS). The name PCOS is a misnomer. Women can have PCO without having PCOS. Women can also have PCOS without having any cysts. 50% of us have weight issues. That means 50% dont. Below I have a couple links to get you some good general info on PCOS. The first talks about what the syndrome is and the proper test that shold be done to determine whether you ave it or not. The second one is a quiz to help determine if it might be possible for you to have PCOS. http://www.inciid.org/faq/pcos.html http://www.pcosupport.org/support/quiz.php As for getting pregnant, many of us have children here, myself befroe I was properly treated for PCOS. Insulin sensitizers such as metformin often work well for us because for many of us, it is our metabolisms that are causing the hormones problems that result in infertility. Still, there are some women that do have to have fertility treatments ontop of the insulin sensitizers. It can be difficult for some of us to have children but most of us can just some of us easier than others. If you have PCOS and are insulin resistant it is important to get treatment reguadless of wether you want to have children or not. It is a progessive syndrome that along with infertility can lead diabetes, obesity, heart problems, liver desease, hogh cholestral and stroke. I suggest finding a good endocrinologist in your area. This is a hormonal not a reproductive issue and endocrinologists specialize in this. Hope that helps. JAnet Heller
