Re: feeling worse after glucophageFrom: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 25 Aug 2003 16:34:05 -0500 (CDT)
So sorry to hear that you are feeling so bad on glucophase. It takes on average 4-8 weeks for the side effects to subside if you do experience them. Mine side effects werent as bad as yours(at least stomach-wise), but the tiredness lasted 6 weeks and then as quickly as they came they left. I got a couple quick questions to ask you about the glucophase you are taking. Is it regular glucophase or glucXR? The GlucXR is time released and for many people is much more tolerable than the regular. HOw much glucophase are you taking??? It is important to start slow and work your way up. My endocrinologist started me on 500 then waited a month before raising it. I would like to think that a doctor rx glucophase (or any drug for that matter) would know information like how much to start with and how to raise the dosages. Alot of us start at 500mg, find it difficult and cut the pills in half for a few weeks. Did your doctor talk to you at all about diet?? What you eat can really effect how your stomach feels. Proccessed carbs like sugar, white flour in bread and pasta, and juices, can upset your stomach on glucophase. Some of us low carb, I just tr to stay awaay from the "bad carbs" and steer toward the "good" ones. Whole grains like whole wheat breads and pasta, beans, and fruit instead of juices. The first few weeks I was on glucophase I did try to limit even the good carbs. I made a huge improvement in my stomach. YOu asked about weight involving your cycle. Like so many other things involed in PCOS, weight is a symptom of the syndrome, not the cause of it. Your metabolism is effecting your homones as well as your weight. There are many women here that do not have a weight problem but still have irregular cycles. We dont take glucophase to loose weight. We take it to improve our metabolisms. The weight loss is just a plus. If you try some of the above suggestions and still see no improvement of how you feel at 8 weeks, you need to talk to the doctor and try another insulin sensitizer. I have heard good things about avandia(actos). For some women it is easier to take than glucophase.
