Re: Woman with PCOS Trying to ConceiveFrom: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 19 Aug 2003 16:57:19 -0500 (CDT)
I am happy that you you did get baby number one while on metformin. What I am concerned with is that I assume that your doctor didnt continue ou on the drug. Metformin does not cause you to ovulate. Metformin is an insulin sensitizer. What that means is that it makes the insulin that your body already makes work better. You body functioning properly is what brought on ovulation. If you were in need of it before, you are in need of it now reguardless if you want to have another baby. As for using gluc XR, some people do tolerate it better than the regular glucophase/metformin. I have heard though that some doctors feel that because it is time released, some people pass it before the drug is completely taken in. Also I want to ass that PCOS is a progressive syndrome and often hormonal changes, such as having a child, can worsen the symptoms. This time it might take a little longer for the drugs to do their thing. A good endocrinologist should wait for at least a year on met/gluc before they start looking for other things to try.
