Hi Jen, I've been on metformin for years. Side effects are stomach ache, diaria (i know I didn't spell that right), gas etc. However, the side effects do lessen over time. It is a good idea to start out slowly. If you are supposed to take 1500mg a day, start out with 500, or 250 per day for a week or two, then slowly build up to the 1500. You can break the 500mg pills in half with a sharp knife. It will be easier on your system if you slowly build up to your full dosage even if it takes a few weeks. Hope that helps.
