Angie: The thyroid problem doesn't really cause you to gain weight but it does make it impossible to take weight off. For me I did gain a few pounds due to my thyroid but it was mainly due to inactivity because I had no energy and also due to not strictly sticking to my diet because I was tired of working so hard and not losing. Believe me, I know your frustration but it will get better, hypothyroidism is easy to treat. After I was put on the right dose of Synthroid I had amazing energy and just felt good. It took about two months to get the dosage right; the doctor starts at a certain dose and adjusts the dosage every two weeks until your thyroid levels normalize. You can get back to your original weight once on Synthroid but for me, I have found that the weight does not come off as fast as it used to (maybe it's cause' I aint as young as I used to be ;). I doubt that the Glucophage became ineffective because of the hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism will stop your periods so my guess is that the Glucophage is still doing it's part and once you get on the meds for your thyroid, your periods will return. Hang in there and best wishes.
