You'll find a lot on this subject if you search the archives, probably under "generic" would get you the most info. yes metformin is just the generic for Glucophage. They are the same medication, in the same amount - but many many MANY women report widely varying results between the two medications. It seems to be the case that the generic metformin has a lower bioavailablity (to be a generic in the US you only have to prove 80% of the same bioavailablity, I hear) or perhaps a different filler ingredient that is causing it to not be as effective as the brand name Glucophage. Many women on this board, myself included, have found their PCOS symptoms coming back as soon as they go on the generic. Glucophage XR is the same thing exactly as regular Glucophage, but it is 'packaged' in a time release coating. So you can take your day's dose at one time and it will be slowly released into your body rather than take them at three (or two or four) different times during the day. A lot of women find XR gentler on the stomach as it's a steady stream of medication and not one big solid hit. I know for me personally, I found my symptoms returning on the XR as well for no apparent reason, BUT the others I know who take it do very well on it. So I think in this case, it's just me!
