PCOS, epilepsy, and depakoteFrom: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 29 Jul 2003 18:16:17 -0500 (CDT)
Hi. I just found this site and I was hoping you could be of some help. I have recently been looking into the Fertility Awareness Method of birth control (no, not the rythum method) by reading the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility." Well, I just read a chapter on anovulation and it fits me perfectly. Now to figure out why... I was diagnosed with epilepsy about 4 years ago and have been on depakote ever since. My periods (if they ever really were periods) have always been irregular, but more so since I went on depakote. I decided to search the internet for depakote and anovulation to see if I could find a link. Sure enough PCOS comes up. Not only does it say that depakote can make it worse, but that PCOS can actually cause epilepsy. No one ever figured out why I had a seizure 4 years ago. Could it have actually have been due to undiagnosed PCOS and I am just now finding out? If so, I will be horrified! Just now at the time when I want to have children I find out I might just have a fertility problem that could have been diagnosed years ago, and to top it off, it is made worse by the very drugs used to keep my seizures away. Please reply if you have any info about this. Thanks.
