PCOS QuestionsFrom: Leslie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 29 Jul 2003 15:31:41 -0500 (CDT)
I was told that I probably had PCOS by an endocrinologist about fifteen years ago (I was in my late teens/early 20s). At that time he put me on birth control pills and some sort of steroid. My weight problem got worse, and all he did was fuss at me and tell me that I wasn’t being honest about what I ate. I finally got tired of his put downs and quit going to see him. Around 1994 my gyno sent me to a new endo, because I was so tired I couldn’t hardly function. She found that I had hypothyroidism and a hormone imbalance, but she never mentioned PCOS. She put me on Synthroid for my thyroid and spironolactone for the hormone imbalance. I LOVED the spiro! It helped my hirsutism and brought the hormones under control. I am now 33 and my hubby and I decided that we wanted to try to conceive, so I had to go off the spiro and birth control. My endo went ahead and scheduled me to see a reproductive endo when my hormone levels started to elevate again. When I went to see the repro endo, he brought up PCOS. I had to go have some blook work and then started on Metformin. He also recommended that I not get any heavier than I am (I’m about 30 lbs overweight) and that I should try to lose some weight. My questions are these: I have been reading that a low carb diet is better for someone who is IR. Is this true? I tried a low carb diet last year. I stayed on it five weeks and only lost 5 lbs (I lost them in the first two weeks and nothing the last three weeks) What are good carbs vs bad carbs? Should I be on this type of diet if I am trying to conceive? How long does it usually take to start ovulating once going on Metformin? Is there anyone out there who has PCOS and hypothyroidism that conceived and had a successful pregnancy? Sorry this is such a long post. I am just worried that I have waited too long to try to conceive. I am hoping that some of you will have some success stories to lift my spirits.
