Re: Frustration is setting in...From: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 23 Jul 2003 23:56:45 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Alyssa, So sorry to here that you arent doing well on met. There are a bunch of reasons that you may be having problems. First off, (and to me I think this is the problem), 1000mg is too high to start with. No wonder you were so sick. My endo started me on 500mg for a month before she upped it to 1000mg. It has been often suggested here that you start with 250 if 500 is giving you a problem. I do want to add that what you eat when you are taking met matters greatly in the severity of the side effects, especially in the first few weeks. Did you doctor mention anything about diet to you??? Processed carbs like sugar, juice and white flour can really bring on the "met moments". I found that the first couple of months I had to really watch even my "good carb" intake, limiting it even further than I do now. If this is just an adjustment problem things should get better. Most of the side effects go away in about 6-8 weeks. I have heard one other thing diet wise. Some women cant do dairy on met either. This sounds strange to me because it says right on the bottle to take it with milk, but I wouldnt dispute them have a problem with that. Given that 30% of the population is lactose intolerant, I'm kinda wondering if maybe the met is exasterbating a otherwise dormant problem. I dont have any evidence for this, its just a theory of mine. Another problem cam be the metformin itself. I have had hardly no problems at all on met, but there are others here that have to have the name brand glucophase or even the time released glucXR. Having had an extensive conversation with my KMart Pharmacist, I have learned that all generics are not created equal. There are several grades of generic drugs and you might be getting one that is giving you some issues. It might be worth checking out what certification your generic brand is, or like alot of other women here, switch to the name brand. If the above options do not make you feel better in about 2 months, you might have to try actos. Metformin/Glucophase works in the liver, actos/avandia works on the muscles. Some find one more tolerable than the other. The big thing that I want you not to do is give up hope. It might take a while to get things on track for you, but hopefully the benefits will far weigh out the trouble you are having now. Good luck and let us know how it is going for you.
