Re: carb cravings on metFrom: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 21 Jul 2003 13:34:16 -0500 (CDT)
HOw long have you been low-carbing??Metformin is an insulin sensitizer. It could be possible that you are going to low on your carbs and giving yourself low blood sugar. Being that junk food is mostly processed carbs, the more you eat of them, the more you want. I dont know if this will help but the next "candy attack" you get, try having a healthy "good carb" alternative such as half a ham and cheese sandwich on whole wheat. Having gone the "atkins route" I can vividly remembering staring at the crackers that came with my salad thinking "I MUST EAT THESE". Not eating them resulted in uncontrolable shaking. I now understand that I was having a hypoglycemic eposode. Because of what metforin does, your body might be sending a similar message. I do eat carbs but not as many as I used to. My main goal is to make the most out of every carb that I do eat. No white bread, no juice, no sugar. I had spagetti last night for supper. It was whole wheat and I had a nice big salad with it so I ate about half the amount that I would have ate before. My second suggestion (that I should take to heart myself) is that healthy snacking is a good thing. My brain has been programed for so many years that all food is bad and the less you eat of it, the better. This is a very difficult thing to change. Small meals more often is the best way of combatting insulin issues. Maybe if I type that 100 times I start practicing what I preach.
