Metformin is the generic of Glucophage. Some people seem to tolerate the Glucophage better than the Metformin. Other use the Glucophage XR, which is extended release and tends to be easier on the stomach. I am not sure about the differences, except that my mom who is Type II Diabetic, cannot take the Metformin as it doesn't work for her. She has to take the Glucophage or the Glucophage XR. I am on the Glucophage XR as well. I asked for it though, as I had heard that it was easier on the stomach and I did not wish to deal with more stomach upset than I do on a normal basis with IBS. I haven't had any problems at all with it so far.
