lactic acidosisFrom: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 7 Jul 2003 13:48:22 -0500 (CDT)
With all this talk about lactic acidosis the last couple of days I thought I would post this web page to help clarify the chances of getting it http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/Profs/PUarticles/5.htm#Not IF you dont wished to forage the info there it say that in clinical trials .06 of 1,000 people taking metformin got lactic acidosis. Primarily, these patients were all elderly, all with histories of renal failure, liver desease, or alcholism. With that said, I did read another article that I unfortunately cant find talking about the importance of being well hydrated while on metformin. The article stated that severe dehydration could possibly cause lactic acidosis. But aside from that and not taking it if you are going to have injectable dyes for exrays, it is a very safe drug.
