Re: what did you do to relieve the side effects of metformin?

DOnt start on 1000mg. Was this a gyneacologist that told you to do that???just curious. Start with 500mg with a meal. If that seems a too much, cut the pill in half. SLow is the best way of doing this. I was on 500mg for a month before my doctor took me up to 1000, then another month to 1500. It seems on average that if you get symptoms, and not everyone does, they seem to go away in about 6 weeks. Boy, I want to hunt down your doctor and tell him a thing or 2. Did he not mention a word about diet to you?? Beyond helping with insulin resistance, what you eat can play a magor role in how you feel on metformin. SUgar is to be avoided. So are refined carbs such as white bread, white pasta, juices, pretty much instant anything. You can have carbs, but they need to be in moderation. WHole grain breads and pastas are fine. I personally felt that fruit needed to be restricted the first few weeks, but if you want to try it, you find out quick if it is a bad idea or not. The best thing is to use you own judgement on what foods you tolerate better than others.

Now as for symptoms, though some people do get nausea while on met, my issue was diahrea about 20 mins after I ate. I didnt see it as a big problem because I knew when it was gonna happen and made sure I was near a bathroom at the proper time. Remember, NOT EVERYONE GETS SICK. For most of us it seems the less carbs you eat in the beginning (even the good ones) the better. Another symptom that can, but not always occur is fatigue. I seemed to need a nap every afternoon. This too lasted about 6 weeks.

I know this seems a little daunting, but for me at least, it was a minor inconvenience to drop 40 pounds, get my thinning hair to return, have periods once a month instead of once a year, as well as get energy that I hadnt had in a long time.
