Re: I need some adviceFrom: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 26 Jun 2003 12:58:47 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Mary, I, along with a lot of other "cysters" have hypothyroidism as well as PCOS/IR. I take metformin for the IR and synthroid for my thyroid. Until recently they were not considered connected, however that thinking is starting to change. Both your pancreas and your thyroid are controlled by the hypothalmus. THe current theroy is that there is a genetic mutation in the brain causing us problems. Now I know that there are going to be people saying that they have no family history of PCOS, diabetes, or thyroid desease. THat I am sure is true. WHO is to say what the enviroment's part is in impacting so many things concerning our health as well as birth control pills and synthetic hormones use to treat other issues? For a good many of us though, wether diagnosed or not, we have family members that exhibit all the classic signs of IR. I my self look at photos of my grandmother's family, all short, heavy, thin hair, few and no children to know directly where my IR has come from. ALL of these women became diabetics in their 50's. Because they are no longer with us, I can only asume that they, along with so many of us even now, were undiagnosed PCOS/IR victims. As for you concerns reguarding BCPS, they really don't treat PCOS, they only masked the symptoms. Are you seeing a endocinologist? THey specialize in treating hormonal problems. THough some will disagree with me here, I frimly belive that the cause of all our problems is insulin. For me at least getting an insulin sensitizer, changing my diet by restricting processed carbohydrates and sugar have made a world of difference in the way I look and feel. Fell free to Email me at the adress below if you have an other questions. If you do, please put PCOS somewhere in the heading.
