Re: Glucophage & side effectsFrom: Janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 25 Jun 2003 21:24:39 -0500 (CDT)
HI Lisa, It seems fairly common to get at least some of the side effects of glucophase for most of us. SOme us us have severe problems, while others have no symptoms at all. FOr me, I had diarhea about 20 mins after I ate for about 6 weeks. That seem to be the average time to adjust to it. Did'nt seem like that much of a biggie for me especially when my clothes started to get too big. I seemed a little tired too at first but that went away also and now I have more energy than I had in a long time. How you are effected by it time will only tell. however, there are ways to keep the side effects at a minimmum. First, start with 500mg/day will a meal. If this is a problem, cut the dosage in half. After the first week take one half with one meal and another with the next one. Second ( this was the most important thing for me), no sugar, no white bread, white pasta, juices. Proccessed carbohydrates in general are to be avoided. I still try to stick to the whole grains as much as I can, but I have pizza now and again with no problems since I have been on glucophase for about a year now. Metformin is an insulin sensitizer. When you eat processed carbs, your body doesnt get enough time to convert them into energy. When you are on glucophase, the effects is the "gluc moments" that you have apparently heard about. IF you are still having severe problems with it, glucXR might be what you need. It's time released and some people tolerated better than the regular. Good Luck Janet Heller
