HI Heather,

Metformin is not a weight loss drug. It is an insulin sensitizer. What that means is that it makes the insulin that you already produce work better. Often that results in weight loss but not always. You ask about weight loss here and you will get a pile of different suggestions. What I did was eliminate the refined carbs in my diet(sugar, white pasta, white bread, potatoes, juices, ect...). SOme of us have had success with atkins, but it made my blood sugar way too low, and that was before metformin. I wouldn't even want to think about trying that now that i am on 1700 of met. With that said, I have heard girls swear by it. I have lowered my carbs, but I do eat bread and pastas that are whole grain, brown rice, as well as some fruit, but all in moderation. I lost 40 pounds by doing this. THe other key is excersize. I would be at the gym till I dropped before met and nothing happened, now due to bad knees I excersize moderately. Where was met when I was healthly???

My other suggestion is that maybe you might need more met to work for you. Some of us do well on 1000mg and others of us have to go over 2000. This you will have to talk to you endocrinologist about.

HOpe this helped.
