Re: What does MET do for infertitlity??From: Char (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 18 Jun 2003 15:50:20 -0500 (CDT)
Glucophage (aka Metformin) is an insulin sensitizer. It helps the body absorb it's insulin more efficiently which then controls things like insulin resistance and the reactive hypoglycemia associated with it. In many women, pcos is originally caused by insulin resistance. Sometimes the insulin resistance is very obvious and other times, such as in my own personal case, it is very borderline and subtle and hard to detect. It's the excess insulin that has a big effect on the hormones and ovaries and other related things. In most cases, but apparently not in all pcos cases. So, if you have insulin resistance, and you get it under control with met, the symptoms effected such as pcos hopefully go away. Some women such as myself need a little extra help in addition to met. But that is basically the way it works. Met is not in itself a fertility drug. But it controls the cause of the infertility and a domino effect occurs. I hope I explained this well to you.
