Re: Anyone have this? - Q about bleeding and Prometrium - LONG replyFrom: tera (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 15 Jun 2003 08:59:38 -0500 (CDT)
Hi! I don't really have an answer for you as I'm going through the same thing myself. I just wanted to give you a run down as to what is happening with me so that you don't feel alone. I've had a "normal" period for about a year and a half after I started Metformin (yay!! It was great!!). In Feb. of this year I missed a lot of doses because I was out of town a lot and "out of my element". So, because of that I didn't get a period in Feb. and March. Then I started bleeding shortly before Easter. I bled for about two weeks and then the bleeding got irregular: 1-3 days of heavy bleeding and then 1-3 days of little or no bleeding. I didn't call my doc because I have had marathon periods before after missing a period for a few months (because I had 2 months worth of lining to shed). So, I rested and tried to stay off of my feet because that has helped my marathon periods in the past. On May 27 the bleeding increased to 1 super max tampon every 45 min. - 1 hr. with huge clots. I had my doc paged and she wanted me to start one Provera pill per day to slow the bleeding. On May 29th I started going through a super max tampon every 10-15 min!! Called my doc. She said to go to the ER (it was the weekend) to have my hemoglobin checked. If it was in the danger zone she said that I might have to have a D&C (even though she didn't want me to go through that) because my well being would be in danger if I continued to bleed at that rate. My hemo was 12 so I didn't have a D&C. She upped my Provera to two per day. Bleeding did not improve May 30-31 (still going through a super max every 10-15 min!!!). I woke up around 3 a.m. on the 31st in blood, feeling faint and sooooo sick. I was going in and out. Hubby rushed me to ER. It was a horrible night - everything was moving in slow motion, I had trouble answering questions, etc. My hemoglobin had dropped to 10 (unacceptable). So, for my own safety they put me on one Premarin every 6 hours until the bleeding significantly slowed or stopped (which they didn't want to do since Premarin is estrogen and although it would stop the bleeding, it would build up my lining even more so that when I did bleed again it would be heavy). It took about 24 hours of that to nearly stop the bleeding. I then went to the doc who said that I was too weak to bleed anymore and that they wanted me to dump the Premarin and take double Provera for two weeks to try to keep the bleeding at bay so that my hemoglobin could build back up so that I could finish the bleed (an ultrasound showed that my lining was at 13!!) and hopefully avoid a D&C. So since then I've been on double Provera. Needless to say, I am still bleeding on the Provera but it's "holding the dam back". This coming Tuesday is my last day of Provera. So, the true test will be after I'm done with the Provera. Either the period that follows will be heavy but go smoothly and it will "reset" me or it will get out of hand again and I will then have no choice but to have a D&C to keep myself out of danger. Sorry so long, but TRUST ME, I know how awful this can all be!!! Stay off of your feet as much as you possibly can. I'm sure you know that everytime you stand up you feel a "rush" - yuck!! I'm glad that I don't work because I've been on rest for WEEKS!! It DOES help!! In case you don't get this, I'll e-mail you personally. I'll pray for you!! God bless, Tera
