Re: I can't want to deal with this anymore! VentingFrom: Wendy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Jun 2003 19:12:50 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Ann, Coming from someone who is 36 and was diagnosed back in my early 20's, I can tell you I have been aware of and have dealt with this issue a long time. Of course, 15 years ago, doctors didn't much care what PCOS was or how to treat it. Seemed like all of mine always wanted me to be on the pill, as if that was the "magic bean". It's been a LONG journey for me and most of my help I got from myself and my determination not to let this kill me. Let me tell you what I have learned on how to cope with this. First, I went on the Atkins diet. The first two weeks were a little tough, but all in all, I felt SO much better and discovered energy. In addition, start walking, biking, swimming, something. You will find that exercise and the right diet will help GREATLY! I've lost about 35 lbs and find I don't "crash" after eating. Plus, you won't see life as so despondent because you WILL feel better. Second, I went to 4, count'em, FOUR doctors, before I found one that would treat me like a human being, not some kind of freak that "thought" I was smarter then them. Get the tests; get some Metformin and get going. When someone gets condecending with you; smile, and walk on girl! You are not insane and there is a problem, but not entirely with you. Doctors bear much of the responsibility of this. Third, realize that your life, if it was at all like ours involved, facial hair, balding, being overweight, infertile, tired, ugly, and basically feeling like crap and worthless. You're right, you can't go back. Now you have a choice. Stay in this "time" of your life and mope and groan, to which you will lose most your friends and your husband will tire of it; OR suck it up, realize you CAN beat this and enjoy the new body and mind you will develop. (Being depress is another symptom of PCOS.) Fourth, read all the books you can get at the library on PCOS and insulin resistance. Read up on your condition and realize it's not as bad as it seems. There are people much worse off fighting cancers and such. We KNOW that with diet, exercise and medication, we can be healthier, happier and in better shape than most of the population. Let this be a catalyst for a great looking body, calm mind and a new lease on life. And last (I know this is long), either come to this site and give and get advice. Use the women here, and their experiences as a sounding board. If that isn't enough, seek a counselor who KNOWS about PCOS and the symptoms of the syndrome. Hang in there. Don't give up. I had the same thoughts as you, trust me and I made it. I know you can too.
