Possible Metformin side effectsFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 10 Jun 2003 18:29:47 -0500 (CDT)
I've read through all Metformin side effects posts but did not find any symptoms similar to mine. I was on Metformin for about a month when I started experiencing tightness in the chest and difficulty swallowing and breathing. It got progressively worse until one evening when I hyperventilated (for the first time in my life) and ended in emergency room. However, the blood tests and EKG seemed normal, so the emergency doctor diagnozed it as anxiety. I stopped taking Metformin for a couple of weeks, and I was OK. I then started using it again, and after a week of taking it I got another "anxiety attack". This time it was tightness in the chest, difficuly with breathing, chills, and strong metallic taste in my mouth. My doctor dismissed it as yet another "anxiety attack", but told me that I don't have to take Metformin if I don't want to. Did anyone have anything similar happen to them? I was taking Metformin for PCOS. I had all the symptoms of getting my period, and I even started bleeding a little at the time when I started having "anxiety" problems. I had usual side effects of Metformin before, such as cramps and diarea. I lost 4-5 pounds on Metformin, so I was really intent on taking it until I had all these problems.
