Re: Getting Really Frustrating with PCOS SymptomsFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 4 Jun 2003 21:20:33 -0500 (CDT)
Yikes! You sound like you are IR (insulin resistance). Have you pursued this? Have you had a fasting insulin and c-peptide test? Or how about your cortisol level? Have you had that checked with a 24 hour urine test? Weight loss can lessen the symptoms a bit for a while temporarily when you are young maybe, but don't let anyone try to convince you that weight loss is the answer alone. It is not. PCOS is not caused by weight gain. And if you are IR, it will be harder and harder to lose the weight to begin with. IR, once it sets in good, causes weight gain no matter how much you diet and exercise. I know from experience. PCOS does not reverse and go away. But it can be maintained and controled properly by the rights medication(s), diet, and exercise combined. All three!!! Talk to a doctor about getting on glucophage or some other insulin sensitizer to put a stop to the weight gain and bring an end to the additional symptoms that may appear later on. (Note, to avoid feeling sick or having side effects in the beginning, go slow and take a tiny dose and build up, there's no rush!). Then when you have this under control, I can highly recommend electrolosis as a lesser expensive way to get rid of the excess hair. But only AFTER you have things under control, otherwise it will just keep growing back and will cost you a bundle.
