Re: Anyone from the UK?, I have some questions.From: Dave (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 1 Jun 2003 22:35:12 +0100
Hi Lin I'm from the UK. I too found that the pill masked PCOS symptoms, but only so far for me, as I couldn't actually get on with any of them. Being prescribed met depends on the gynae / specialist that you see. Some are really cool about it, others don't want to know. I have been incredibly lucky to find two drs willing to prescribe it, to control the IR side of PCOS, help PCOS without it relating at all to fertility. I live in Essex, so I don't know about your area for drs. I would just ask to be referred to a specialist, unless you have private medical insurance there will probably be a long wait. I personally found my gynae to be the best person, I was trying to get pregnant, but it was a whole year before I started treatment for the infertility side, as he treated the PCOS first. I low carbed for about four months prior to becoming pregnant, I bought a book about low carbing, and then looked for recipes online. I never actually bought any specific low carb stuff, but you can buy it on line. However, I have heard that to be honest, most of it is a disappointment. If you have access to newsgroups, there is an excellent one that I can recommend, although I am a little hazy with the name - alt support diet - to do with low carb. They share recipes and give each other loads of help and advice. It is mainly Americans on there, so they have access to the low carb stuff, but I'm a veggie, and I found plenty to help me! (Try Holland and Barrett for some of the low carb ingredients.) My gynae said basically that I could eat as much protein as I wanted (difficult for a veggie!!) as much veg as I wanted - but especially leafy green veg, and be careful with which fruits I ate. I looked at the labels on everything, high fat stuff has less carbs than low fat, and I lost nearly two stone, which was great for me. Loads of luck Cathy
