Re: PCOS: False Positve for Pregnancy?From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 27 May 2003 20:47:59 -0500 (CDT)
They say a line is a line is a line! ANY positive result on a hpt is almost certainly positive for pregnancy. The ONLY thing that would affect that result is if your friend had been undergoing fertility treatments that involved hcg injections. The hpt's test for hcg in the urine, which is only produced by a pregnancy: so if the strip is reacting at all, you / she is almost certainly pregnant. If she hasn't yet missed a period (although with PCOS it can be hard to tell?) the line would be VERY light. Those tests are often not at all considered accurate until 14 days post ovulation / day of missed period, because the hcg hasn't had enough time to build up in your system enough to react with the test. The earlier you test, the lighter the line. Also, women with PCOS tend to produce hcg slower than women without; this means that the line is fainter for longer. As long as her doctor is running a pregnancy test, whether it's blood or urine, that's a good thing! The blood test will actually be more accurate and will tell the exact amount of hcg in her body, which can help date the pregnancy a bit. HTH and congrats to her!
