Re: birth control and weight gainFrom: Char (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 20 May 2003 21:39:39 -0500 (CDT)
I am on a birth control pill called Demulen 35 and it did not cause me to gain a single pound. There are many different options for treating pcos. Birth control pills are not the only option. Sometimes insulin resistance is prevelent in women with pcos. Ask your doctor to test your fasting insulin and c-peptide levels, not just your hormones, to see if this may be a factor for you. If it is, sometimes an insulin sensitising medication such as glucophage can actually help by controlling your insulin which may result in your hormones functioning normally. In addition to glucophage, a high protein low carb diet helps a lot in weight control. Sugar Busters is an excellent book explaining this way of eating. You also may want to have your cortisol level tested. This is done with a 24-hour urine test. Sometimes cortisol levels have an effect on hormones and can mimic pcos symptoms. If your gyn is not familiar with all the aspects of pcos and choices of treatments, get a second opinion from a doctor called a "reproductive endocrinologist". There are also many good books on pcos that can help you understand this disease and familiarize yourself with the causes and your options. It's ok to explore all avenues before making some final choices.
