Re: Confused and StressedFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 20 May 2003 20:24:41 -0500 (CDT)
Your gyn doesn't seem to know a whole lot about PCOS... wait to do ANYTHING until you've seen the endo and see what they say. If you get a good endo, they can manage your care, and no worries! But don't let your gyn stress you. Let's see where to start.... definitely PCOS and annovulation (not ovulating) are related. Not ovulating is a key piece to the pathology of PCOS. I have never heard of BC *starting* ovulation, generally it is used as birth control (hence the name!) for exactly that reason - it *prevents* ovulation. Ovarian drilling is an outdated method of PCOS treatment, done in the years when they thought the ovaries caused PCOS. It really is only used now as an absolute last resort for fertility treatments alone, not for PCOS treatment. It can cause problems (like scar tissue adhesions) and only offers a small window of time in which to get pregnant anyway. It won't cure your PCOS. 500mg of Glucophage is also an extremely small dose. It IS a good dose to start out with, because it's good to get your body used to it in small increments at a time. But hopefully your endo will raise the dose for you! There's no "cure" for PCOS itself. But we CAN both treat the disorder behind PCOS (insulin resistance) and all of the symptoms (medications etc for fertility, acne, facial hair, and so on.) Together these can make a huge difference. Not sure what your gyn is talking about to be honest :) Hope this helps you stress less - again talk to the endo! They usually know more anyway!
