Hi, I had a hysterectomy a year ago February, 2002. The reason I ended up having one was the severe pain I was experiencing with my periods that wouldn't go away with any medical treatments. At first the dr thought I had endo from a mapping exam. I went through 6 months of lupron shots and it didn't help. She told me that even if they did do a lap to diagnose, they probably couldn't do the procedure accurately or even at all because of my weight, I am over 300 pds. I went to a pelvic surgeon who is the best in his field here in the Portland area for a second opinion and he confirmed everything the other dr said. So we proceeded with the hysterectomy. The plan was to leave one ovary so I wouldn't have to go on hormones, because I was 35 at the time. But when the dr got in there to see exactly what was going on, I was full of fibroids and scar tissue and was in pretty bad shape, which would explain all the pain I was experiencing. So he ended up having to take everything, but he left my cervix, which is why I still need a yearly pap. As far as my pcos symptoms go, they are no worse, nor any better. I haven't had problems adjusting to the hormones either, it hasn't been bad at all. I have to take it in pill form instead of using the patch because I was allergic to the adhesive on the patch. They were really nice to use because you would put one on for the week and then change it the next week. No muss, no fuss! There are many people who have strong opinions for or against having a hysterectomy, but I have to say it was the best thing that I could have ever done for myself. I GOT MY LIFE BACK! I feel great and have no regrets whatsover for my decision. I hope this helps, take care.
