Sharing Nutrionalist AdviceFrom: Angela (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 1 May 2003 11:20:12 -0500 (CDT)
I met with a Nutrionalist yesterday to talk about how to eat as a person with PCOS. She offered some great advice and made me feel much better. I am TTC and not a diabetic at this point. I am in need of losing 30-40 pds as well and just started metformin. How many carbs? - She said 50 per meal and 2 snacks of 15 per day. Emphasizing that type of carb is very important. She said carbs were VERY VERY important especially if you are TTC. How about sugar? - I tend to try to get sugar free things. She said this wasn't necessarily the best idea. That when things say sugar free - they substitute the sugar with something called sugar alcohol which is just as bad. She said if you have to decide between something that is sugar free and light always check the carbs and go with the lower one. She said not to pay attention to what the label says the sugar amount is. Instead she said to stay away from things in the ingredient list that end in -ose - EXCEPT for Lactose and Fructose - which is good. What about fruit? - She said fruit is good for us - but to always try to combine it with protein. So eat an apple or banana with some peanut butter, a few nuts, cheese, something to slow down the sugar in the fruit. Also, she said to always opt for fresh or frozen fruits and veggies before canned ones. Junk foods? She said if you are going to eat opt for things like cheesecake instead of pound cake, etc. She said also, don't eat it alone. Eat it RIGHT after a meal or again with some protein. She recommeded Zone candy bars if you have to have one. Drinks? Basically - water, skim milk, unsweetened tea, crystal light and juice that has sucrolose - not sucrose - cause Sucrolose is Splenda. Cereal? Plain oatmeal or Kashi Bread & Pasta? She said of course, to always get whole wheat, multigrain etc. She recommended triscuits for crackers. Butter? Smart Balance she said was the best - but first try to use Pam, Butter Spray or Olive Oil first. Well, that is all I have for now. Hope this helps someone!!
