Met. Symptoms

Hi all,

I took my first dose of Metformin yesterday (Monday).

I had been having problems with constipation (AGAIN) over the last several days. Unfortunately I think taking the Met. while constipated compounded my problem. I got really really sharp pains all throughout my gut and stomach, felt nauseous, and got pretty tired. The fatigue actually started shortly before all the stomach and abdominal pain. My partner and I were out back trying to get our pool set up and I wasn't quite sure whether I was having a reaction to the Met. or from the heat (upper 80's here in the desert). After about 2 hours of having these pains in my gut / stomach off and on, I did manage to have a small BM and within 10 minutes all the pain went away and I was able to function and help finish our project - no problems.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this kind of side effect from the metformin?

Could my problem have been the constipation aggrivated by taking something that is known to cause diarrhea as a side effect (but was unable to pass through me, causing a lot of pressure and bloating)?

And one final question... Are there any other women here who suffer from BOTH PCOS and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (with constipation as the primary symptom, although any form of IBS symptom will be ok. :)) )?

I have not been diagnosed with IBS, but have had symptoms for 15+ years. I ask because some reading that I've done online says that more women than men have IBS and that studies have shown that the IBS can be aggrivated by reproductive hormones in women. It seems that if a woman has PCOS and those hormones are way out of whack, and she also has IBS - her symptoms may be much worse than in a woman with normal hormone levels and regular periods. I would really like to discuss this with anyone who is interested and who can relate! In private or in the forum if it wouldn't be too off topic.

Thanks in advance,

Dawn
