Re: Clomid / IUI seems a little drastic... please help!From: tera (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 21 Apr 2003 13:18:13 -0500 (CDT)
Hi! I've been through all of this - so have many who post here. Your body belongs to you and you have the right to say what happens to it and when. If you're not ready for IUI then you're not ready. You could try other things first. Many of us have tried Clomid alone or Clomid with Metformin first before going to IUI. Also, I don't know if you're taking Metformin now, but if you aren't I suggest that you should at least look into it. Even if your PCOS is mild like you say, Metformin could help your PCOS and could help you to conceive or even help you to have a healthier pregnancy. Metformin has helped many women with PCOS who don't even test positive for insulin resistance and who are thin. You can read an article about this on the PCOS Association's website. Also, studies have shown that more women with PCOS ovulate on a combination of Clomid and Metformin than women who just take the Clomid alone. The ovulation rate of PCOS women who take a combination of the two meds is really high. The probable reason for your doctor wanting to go straight to IUI is your husband's sperm count and motility. IUI gives the sperm a head start. IUI is a normal infertility treatment for low sperm count and motility. So, I wouldn't say that your doctor is rushing or taking drastic measures at all in that regard. Clomid and IUI might sound scary and drastic but Clomid is not as strong of an infertility med as many injectables and the risk for multiples is relatively low. Many of us have taken this med. Also, IUI is a very "not scary" procedure in my opinion. Many of us have also had an HSG. An HSG is a standard test for the beginning of almost any infertility treatment - whether or not the doctor even suspects a blockage in your tubes. Many insurance companies do not cover a lot of infertility treatments so you do not want to waste time and money and procedures if your tubes are blocked. Even if money isn't an issue, your emotions are an issue and ttc can be very emotional. If you don't have this procedure done and you do happen to have blocked tubes, you most likely will not become pregnant with IUI (because with IUI, your egg has to travel down the tubes) and you will be sad and discouraged and you'll waste time and money. An HSG is a very important test and I would strongly suggest that you take your doctor's advice and have it done. Some women have said that it was painful and for some it is but for me, it just felt like a really big period cramp. If it is painful for you, the pain will be over in a very short amount of time - like a day or so. I hope this helps. I hope for you the very best. I'll pray for you!!! God bless, Tera
