Article in Ladies Home JournalFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netFri, 4 Apr 2003 21:39:50 -0600 (CST)
I just read a mini-article on PCOS in Ladies Home Journal (May 2003, bottom of page 171). Glad it's getting more coverage...unfortunately, they make it sound like you must have polycystic ovaries to have PCOS...it's so small, I'll just type it here so nobody runs out to but the magazine... The Meaning of Missed Periods If you haven't had a period for six months or more (and you're not pregnant or perimenopausal), you could be among the 10% of women ages 18-44 who suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a condition that causes infertility and is now thought to increase a woman's risk for diabetes, heart disease, and even endometrial cancer. PCOS, characterized by multiple ovarian cysts, often goes undetected. But researchers are working to identify a PCOS-causing gene that could be used for earlier diagnosis to help prevent adverse effects. For more information about a PCOS clinical trial call 800-847-6060 or pcos@northwestern.edu.
