Re: Do I really have PCOS? What should I be doing?From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 31 Mar 2003 13:22:35 -0600 (CST)
Hi tracey - Your numbers do look pretty good! Your insulin especially is in a great range, which I know (ironically) is almost disappointing but that's really so good for your health. The only thing I can see there that's really otu of whack is your testosterone, and it's not horrible - but definitely above where it should be. That high testosterone is *likely* what's causiing your irregular periods and hair growth. The question is what is causing the high tstosterone! I think that's one for your RE to answer. PCOS is a veyr possible culprit (some women are more sensitive to even low insulin levels and their PCOS works that way) but it could be other problems as well. Assuming this is PCOS, the low carb diet is worth trying (can't hurt anything to try it and see if it helps!) and then, if you're just not seeing any results, bug your RE until you find out what's going wrong in your body and what can be done to fix it. There is some evidence out there that metformin helps women with PCOS even if their insulin tests as normal, so that may still be an option too. GL!
