Do I really have PCOS? What should I be doing?From: Tracey (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 30 Mar 2003 22:56:34 -0600 (CST)
I am so confused ... all of my OB's have said that I have PCOS but no one ever really walked me through why and how they knew this (other than I was infertile). So I finally went again to a RE to see, do I or don't I? I was waiting on my bloodwork to come back to confirm that I did have it. But some of the results suprised me. (Also, I am hypoglycemic). Can somebody react to these values and symptoms - do I have PCOS? My fasting glucose was 82 and then 2 hour was 70. My f.insulin was 5 and then 14, which I think means I am not insulin-resistant (??) My testoterone was 62, triglycerides were 181 and cholesterol was 229. All others test numbers were normal. The nurse giving me my bloodwork says I have a mild PCOS. So I asked what should I do? They said take bcp to get my period regularly (it usually only happens 2-4 times a year on its own) and follow a low-carb diet. I asked about Metformin but they said that it wouldn't help me b/c my insulin levels were ok. As far as other symptoms, I have some excess hair growth (but not anything major) and very few periods a year. Any opinions? Thanks in advance! Tracey
