The verdict is still out...From: Suzy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:23:28 -0600 (CST)
I was wondering if it was possible to at least get an idea if I have PCOS going by symptoms alone. I had a blood test a couple months ago, but the Endocrinologist/Repro specialist said all my levels were normal on cholesterol, horomones and insulin. But when I first visited her, she said she was 95% sure I had PCOS. I tried to get more information on exact numbers, I got the brush off. Because I wasn't trying to get pregnant, they assumed it wasn't important. And all along they're telling us early diagnosis is the key to controlling symptoms. I relayed the message to my OB/GYN and they never called me back. After trying several times to get through with information, I gave up. Plus, I work crazy hours and just don't have time to stand by the phone anymore. I even work in the medical field and don't have time to find out about my own condition. It's ridiculous. Anyway, I've had the following symptoms since I was 15: irregular or no periods, labial cysts (I know this is not an std because I've had them since I was a virgin and they come and go), severe acne, hirsuitism (excessive hair growth on face, arms, legs, you name it), occasional sharp pains in my lower abdomen, change in voice (it has to be hormonal). And I've also been on several bc pills, recently it's Yasmine and it seems to be ok so far but I've only been on it for a few months. But I have noticed some symptoms that could be the culprit of the pill: depression and mood swings. I've also been on Alesse and Ortho Tri-cyclen, which made my acne worse and increased testosterone levels. I had to use Spironilactone with the Ortho then switched to Alesse, which made me gain 20 lbs and my moods were disconcertingly even. Getting back to the acne, about two months after I go off the pill, the acne comes back with a vengeance but it seems to be under control now and the hair growth has lessened. Only problem is I'm dependent on the pill to control this and what if I ever want to get pregnant? Has anyone out there ever gotten pregnant while on the pill with this condition?
